Quigley turns 10!
It’s Quigley’s 10th birthday! Since I don’t the exact day he was born, he gets the entire month of February to celebrate (Yes, he is that spoiled but deserves it). Quigley shows no signs of slowing down; he is still just as energetic as the day I got him. He is very vocal, loves being the center of attention, softly snores when sleeps, and the best hiking partner. This year for his birthday he got a new extra large tennis ball, apple cookies for his “cake”, and some of his favorite peanut butter treats.
Quigley and I have always enjoyed going hiking but this past year we really stepped up our game. Our biggest trip in 2020 was out to Colorado, and I can’t wait for us to explore more big parks like that. During the weekends, we are often found at one of state parks that are within a few hours of driving. During the week though and living in the city, he’s become very accustomed to his 4-5 mile daily walks (cumulative, we do three a day) and will let you know if he feels like you aren’t moving fast enough. He is always ready to go go go.
My adventure with Quigley (Quigs, Quigsmonster, Q, Quiggles) began in September of 2011 when I adopted him from the Lawrence Humane Society. I was living in Lawrence, KS with my college roommates Kayla and Tiffany. I had the genius idea to go to the shelter just to see the dogs but I was ONLY suppose to look. It was upon passing Quigley’s kennel, that I paused though. In the whole shelter, he was the only pup that sat there and didn’t bark as I walked by. I asked if I could take him outside to the play area, he sprinted around, ran in circles, and had the biggest smile on his face. I knew that there was something there between us but I didn’t pull the trigger yet since I did have roommates. I went home and told them both about this adorable puppy. Reluctantly, they agreed and Tiffany went with me the next day to adopt him. Quigley was seven months old when I brought him home. I decided to leave his name as is because his entire litter was given to the shelter and they all had QU names. I wanted him to always have a bit of his family with him, and it was a cute name. He is a border collie and pointer mix.
Ever since then, I’ve had a built-in best friend to celebrate the joys of life with. The past nine years and five months have flown by and even with the decent amount of headaches he has caused, I wouldn’t trade it for the world. As I always tell my friends, “This is Quigley’s world, and I’m just lucky enough to be in it.”
