Q’s Monster Mummy Treats

Halloween is here and Quigley could not wait to share his recipe for some of the BEST spooky Rice Krispy Treats. This year Q wanted to dress as a ghost, and I think he did a fantastic job at understanding the assignment. With his help, I was able to spur up some magic and turn the classic rice krispie treat into this monster mummy creation that will delight the crowds.

Now fire up those cauldrons, because we are about to brew up the perfect concoction for a spooky, scary monster treat with just a few ingredients. Rice krispie treats themselves only take four ingredients: butter, marshmallows, vanilla extract, and the cereal. We are simply adding melted almond bark (vanilla & chocolate flavored) to create the mummy appearance.

What you need

  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter

  • two 10 ounce bags marshmallows

  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

  • 9 cups crispy rice cereal

  • green food coloring

  • Almond bark - chocolate & vanilla

The perfect gooey & sticky consistency

To start, take your cauldron (or just large pot) and melt the 1 ½ sticks of butter over medium heat. Once you see that the butter is all melted, you can take you two 10 oz bags of marshmallows and dump them into the pot. It is recommended to do mini marshmallows, but any type will suffice at the end of the new moon.

Take some parchment paper and line your pan, typically a 9x13in would be ideal but you can use multiple smaller pans if that is all you have. Mist a bit of non-stick spray onto the parchment paper to make it easier to remove the treats later.

The BIGGEST tip Quigley has for you about making the rice krispie part is to NOT overpack the mixture into the pan. All you need to do is gently press the concoction into the pan; this allows you to have the light airiness of rice krispie treats. When you press the mixture into the pan repeatedly it compresses and will make the treats quite hard.

Sizing on these can vary greatly, it just depends on how many you need to make, so cut the treats according to what your needs are. Since these do add a lot of extra sweetness, I do not turn the whole batch into monster mummy’s but instead do only about half.

Creating the monster

The reason we use chocolate almond bark for the eyes instead of the easy premade eyes you can buy is that Quigley insisted that the monster eyes match his brown eyes. The vanilla almond bark makes for a great cloth like crisscross pattern when you liberally drizzle this on the treats. Do not worry if you cover the eyes a little bit, it gives the look that the monster is wrapped inside the decadent vanilla almond bark.

Now you have a spooked-up version of the classic rice krispie treat. From our home to yours, we hope you have a spooky and boo-tiful Halloween this year!

Q’s Monster Mummy Rice Krispie Treats

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter

  • two 10 ounce bags marshmallows

  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

  • 9 cups crispy rice cereal

  • green food coloring

  • Almond bark - chocolate & vanilla

Directions

  1. Line a baking pan with parchment paper and lightly grease the parchment.

  2. Melt the butter over medium heat in a very large pot. Once melted, add the marshmallows. Stir the mixture until the marshmallows are completely melted.

  3. Remove from heat, then immediately stir in the vanilla extract and food coloring. Finally, fold in the cereal. Make sure each piece of cereal is coated with the marshmallow mixture.

  4. Transfer mixture to prepared pan. Using a rubber spatula that is lightly greased (misted with non-stick oil), gently spread mixture to fit the pan. Be careful not to pack down with force, just gently press down to secure it in the pan.

  5. Allow treats to set for at least 1 hour at room temperature.

  6. Using the parchment paper, lift the rice krispie treats out of the pan. Cut into rectangles.

  7. Transfer to a wire-rack lined baking pan and place into rows.

  8. Take your chocolate almond bark melt and put two dots near the top of each piece. These will be the eyes. (Follow package directions for melting, but generally use 50% power on microwave and place the melt into a microwave safe dish and put in for 2 to 2 ½ minutes. Remove and stir, if more time is needed, do 30 second intervals still at 50% power)

  9. Now take your white almond bark melt and drizzle that across the treats all at once. Make your lines crisscross and not perfect, you are creating the outer layer of the mummy!

  10. Enjoy! If there are any leftovers, you can place in layers with wax paper or sheets of parchment between the layers. Store at room temperature for up to 3 days.
